? I want you…..

…. to give me your opinion!

Thats right, I said it. For the next couple of blogs, I want all Salsa Dancers and non salsa dancers to give me their opinion on some-things Salsa.

My next few blogs will ask you (the Amazing people who take time of your busy day to read my blog) some questions.

Questions like:

  • What do you prefer. Should Salsa DJ’s fade songs seamlessly from 1 into the other or should they let a song finish completely and even leave a few seconds break in-between?
  • Why are Salsa People so Passionate, yet so Peaceful? Have you ever seen a physical fight break out at a Salsa venue about between Salseros or Salseras?
  • What would you like to see most of in a South African Salsa Congress? workshops, International stars teaching? Performances? Longer parties? What?
  • Who are your Salsa Crushes (The person you wanna dance with the most)?
  • What is your favorite Salsa Congress in the world? If you have never been to one, which one would you like to go to first?
  • Who are your favorite Salsa Musicians?

These are just some of the questions buzzing in my head and I cant wait to get your opinion on them.

So this is how its gonna work; Whenever you see a blog post starting with a “?” in the title, that means I want your opinion. So once you are done reading any of these kind of posts, make sure you leave a comment at the end of the post with  your opinion.
I really want your honest unbiased opinion, so feel free to sign off your comment as anonymous if need be.

Lets get the ball rolling right here and now:
What would you like to see more of in the Salsa community???

& GO!

Remember to Live….Love & Salsa!

On1, On2, Cuban… Whatever

This past weekend I was at the Hot Salsa Weekend (HSW) in Stockholm, Sweden and needless to say, it was EPIC!

The Unknown Ninja Salsera who Created & Fulfilled a Dance Fantasy of mine all at the same time!

If you have been in the Salsa scene for a while, you will know and appreciate that the Salsa T-Shirt is a novelty thing and you are bound to find some interesting comments on a number of Salsero’s and Salsera’s outfits at any and all Salsa Events.

The HSW was no exception, there was a T-Shirt with a comment that is actually the name of this article – On1, On2, Cuban …. Whatever. The Salsera wearing the T-Shirt was basically making it known that she didn’t mind what style she danced, she could and would do it all depending on the music, the vibe and the partner. She was keen and ready for anything fun & all you had to do was lead.

The Infamous T-Shirt

After seeing this T-Shirt, I was inspired to live up to those words and this became my motto for the rest of the weekend, but with a couple of more dances added on – namely; Bachata, cha cha, merengue, zouk & kizomba. ( I personally don’t believe any 1 style is better than the other, we all just have our personal preferences!)

Now, back to the HSW itself! It was taking place in a really cool venue that had 3 Different Dance Floors playing 1) Puerto Rican Salsa, 2) Cuban Salsa and 3) Bachata. With my Grand plan in check and my red-bull giving me wings, I was on a mission which involved constantly  moving between all 3 dance floors approaching unknown Salseras and having 1 dance after another. It was so satisfying walking up to a Girl on a Cuban dance floor and she says, “I only dance cross body style“, and I was like -‘ Well lets go‘. Then you go to the Puerto Rican dance-floor and you walk up to a woman and she puts her hand up and indicates deuces (also known as the sign for peace) which in the world of Salsa  means On2 and I was like – ‘Well, lets Do it!‘.

The Universal Sign for Peace (Deuces) is the Salsa Sign for On2!

So if you love Salsa, I strongly recommend you decide what style it is you want to do and become REALLY good at it. However, make sure you have at least a basic to intermediate level knowledge of all the other types of Salsa and Latin Dance so the next time someone comes to you and says, ‘Hey, what style of Salsa do you dance?” you too can say – On1, On2, Cuban…. Whatever….

What kind of Drunk are you?

Isn’t it weird how after imbibing a couple of drinks, we all of a sudden loose most of our inhibitions and then that hidden deep dark persona hidden inside of us starts to take over our normal calm self?

This weekend I decided I was only going to drink water. (Lets not get into why)

Come Saturday night, I went out and I hit 2 different spots. Now while I was partying up a storm (as I normally do), I soon realised at some point that I was the most sober person in the room. As this realisation hit me, I remembered; While you can still have fun without alcohol, its never cool to be the only sober person in a room full of drunks (Note: I am using the term drunks very loosely in this post to refer to anyone who drinks even in moderation.)

When this realisation dawned on me, I remembered that there are in-fact very many different kind of drunks. So today, I have decided to blog about it.

As you read it, be honest and ask yourself – “What kind of drunk am I?”

The I am Sexy Drunk – This drunk develops an unbelievable amount of self confidence and instantly believes they are the sexiest person in the room and no one can say No to their advances. (I can see your smile across this screen, so that means you know your fair share of these.)

The guys from Jersey, watch the show and see why they are listed here!

The I love you Drunk – This drunk becomes super talkative, holds you down and usually tells you their deepest darkest secrets. They also  feel its their responsibility to tell you how much they love you over and over again…( this usually makes for an interesting next day encounter, especially if you were sober.)

I love you man!

The I am Funny / Happy Drunk – This drunk insists on talking and laughs at absolutely anything and everything.

You are not as funny as you think

The I have No Shame Drunk – I think the picture says it all.

Really?

The I Think I can Dance/Sing Drunk – This drunk starts to live in a music video and tries to do moves on the dance floor that are virtually impossible to do while sober (or hit notes that even Whitey Houston could not do in her prime). They pay the price the next day when they hurt in places they never even knew existed. (Honestly, what were you thinking?????)

Leave these moves upto the Professionals!

The I am Mike Tyson Drunk – This drunk get paranoid & suddenly imagines that they are Brave-heart and starts giving everyone bad looks and is looking for any excuse to throw down with absolutely anyone, even the car guard or just the cat walking down the street. (Really?? get a life dude.)

Check out my guns

The Crying Drunk (sad) – This drunk just starts crying usually after reflecting on some random memory or thought in their life. (You really wanna stay away from these ones)

The Pass out Drunk – This drunk becomes reclusive and does not talk to anyone for fear of looking like a tool and then eventually passes out.

Ok, so these are all the general types I can think of. If I missed out any, feel free to add to the list.

(DISCLAIMER: Always Drink in moderation and NEVER DRINK & DRIVE)

Now do tell, what kind of Drunk are you?

Steve Jobs words live on….

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being.

Steve Jobs died last night and these words ring true. On-top of being a creative genius, Steve Jobs was also a gifted and creative speaker.

Below of some of his most brilliant quotes or ‘stevenotes’ ( & If you ever get a chance, make sure you read his speech to the Stanford graduates of 2005:
http://news.stanford.edu/news/2005/june15/jobs-061505.html)

Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren’t used to an environment where excellence is expected.

I want to put a ding in the universe.

Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.

Click. Boom. Amazing!

You can’t just ask customers what they want and then try to give that to them. By the time you get it built, they’ll want something new.

Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.

People think focus means saying yes to the thing you’ve got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully.

Focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains

Almost everything–all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure–these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

Stay hungry. Stay foolish!

How long does it take to learn Salsa?

There is a saying out there that implies once you put 10,000 hours into something you will then become a Master at it. I don’t know how true that is, but that statement is the inspiration for this article (that + the number of times students ask me at every group class).

The Master - Bruce 'The Dragon' Lee

Now you can relax, it definitely won’t take you 10,000 hours to learn to dance Salsa (or at least I hope it won’t), but before I answer the question, lets cover 5 things that should get you dancing Salsa really well.

1. Group Classes:
Group classes are one of the fastest and easiest ways to learn Salsa. Most Salsa Schools have what are reffered to as Drop-in Group Classes and these usually happen every week.
If you have never done salsa before, this is the best and easiest way to start. You can rock up anytime and get a quick and easy introduction to dancing Salsa.

The teacher will usually start the class with a warm-up to get you relaxed and excited. They will then go on to give you a concise version of how salsa works, explaining the basic step and the timing to the music. At this point you will  learn a move or 2 in the class, dance it a couple of times and change partners and voila – you have begun your journey of learning to Salsa.

The additional cool thing about Group Classes (apart from the fact that everyone else in the class is also a beginner) is that it is a great way to meet people. You don’t need to come with a dance partner, so you can come with a friend or even ride solo. Most Group classes are set up in a way that accommodates everyone.

2. Private / Focus Group Classes
Once you have taken a few group classes, I would definitely recommend you take some private classes. In a group class, the teacher is taking care of the group and hence you get no ‘individual personal attention.’ In a private class, its all about ‘YOU!’ All your quirks, problems and bad habits will be fixed and you will also get a much deeper and personal understanding of how Salsa works. There is however 1 catch; Private Classes are not cheap.

If you can’t afford private classes, you should definitely consider doing some kind of focus group or workshop that runs over a period of time that continually builds off a foundation. You will not learn as much as you would in a private class, but you definitely start to get a better understanding of how everything fits together.

3. Socials
Once you have learnt the basics & how to do a few moves, its time for the pedal to hit the metal. I am assuming the reason you are learning to dance is so you can actually dance?? Well then you should be DANCING Socially. This is the Number 1 Guaranteed way to improve your dancing. Imagine going to University and getting a degree, but refusing to get a job in the real world? That is exactly what it is like when you attend classes all the time yet you refuse to get onto the social dance floor. You have all the theory and non of the experience.

4. Challenge yourself
Set yourself Goals and constantly challenge yourself especially when you are at socials.

I recommend the following:-

Guys;
a. Ask every lady to dance at least once at every single social that you attend. FYI, every lady means EVERY LADY, from the Novice Beginner to the Advanced (add on-to this, learn to not take rejection personally. If a lady says No, just move onto the next one.)
b. Focus on mastering and perfecting 1 move at a time (Mastering a move means that you can lead 3 different types of ladies successfuly into the move (i) was not in the group class where the move was taught (ii) goes to another dance school & (iii) is an absoulte beginner).

Ladies;
a. Do not be afraid to ask the men to dance if they are not asking you to dance.
b. Do your best to let go and feel a mans lead rather than to predict, think or react to it.
c. Never say No when a man asks you to dance ( unless he physically hurts you or is inappropriate on the Dance Floor). Start to consider every dance with the guys whom you do not like dancing with as a challenge to see how well you can follow even the most outrageous leads.

5. Music
Listen to it and make sure you can at least find the 1 in every song and always ensure that you are dancing to the right beat. To take it even further & in the words of Frankie Martinez; when you dance, you must become part of the band and your body is your instrument. 😉 (Deep stuff….)

Ok, now that I have listed the 5 things, I guess it time to answer the question you have all been waiting for.

How long does it take to learn to dance Salsa?
It Depends. (I doubt that is the answer you were looking for, but hey, its the  Truth.)

Some people take months and others take years. Yet I would say 3 Things apply above all else.
1. The more time you put in, the faster you will learn and the more you will get out.
2. First you must Learn the rules, then you must follow them, once you Master them feel free to  bend or break them.
3. It does not matter how good you become, you will always be learning. So just make sure you are always having fun! 😉

Que Viva La Salsa!

Hi, my name is Chilly and I am a Salsa Addict. Its been 32Hrs since my last dance and it will be another 8Hrs till I dance again. I have been addicted to salsa going on 3 years now and I am loving every minute of it!!!

Define Addiction: The fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or ACTIVITY.

So, how do you know if you are a salsa addict?
I have combined a list of 32 points. If you are guilty of more than 10, well what can I say apart from Ill see you at the next dance meeting 😉

My Interview with a Canadian Bachatera…

In June 2011, I came to a decision to become the first serious Bachatero (Male Bachata Dancer) in Cape Town, South Africa.

What is Bachata? Like Salsa, Bachata is a both a Latin style of music and dance. It originated in the Dominican Republic and the music tells romantic stories, usually of longing,  heartbreak and sadness.

There is without a doubt 1 couple that is synonymous with Bachata. They are Island Touch’s very own – Jorge ‘Ataca’ Burgos & Tanja ‘La Alemana’ Kensinger. They performed what is now the most famous bachata performance to Xtreme’s – Te extraño  that has gotten over 30 million hits on You-Tube. (You too can join the fan-club and check out their unbelievable routine by clicking the link above. )

I recently had the pleasure of hanging out with this Awesome couple on a Salsa cruise in the medditaranean and dancing with Tanja (who has been a salsa dance crush of mine ever since I started dancing Salsa.)

Jorge,Tanja & Me!

While on the same cruise, I also saw a Bachata Performance in the Up & Coming Stars section by Kathy and Angelo. (Click the link to see their amazing performance). This just fueled my inspiration to become even more serious with my Bachata.

Kathy&Angelo

Now once I was back in Cape Town, life happened and I lost some steam on my goal of becoming a real Bachatero, that was until recently when I saw the latest perfromance by Kathy and Angelo. Upon watching it a 2nd time, my inspiration was renewed. When I am inspired, I tend to write and while writing I decided to pick the brain of this lovely Bachatera and see how she became such a wonderful dancer and performer.

So here it is……… My Interview with a Canadian Bachatera (Kathy Dondish):

When & How did you first fall in love with Bachata?
When I heard a Bachata song for the first time while on vacation in the Dominican Republic and learned the basic Bachata step. I knew I wanted to learn more.

What came first – Bachata or Salsa?
They both came at the same time with regards to social dancing. However, I started Salsa training first.

Do you consider yourself first – a Bachatera or Salsera?
I would say both!

What do you love about Bachata?
Its sensuality and the passion that you and your partner can put into it. I can dance salsa with a lot of partners, but Bachata takes that special person to have a connection with.

Who are your Favorite dancers? Who inspires you?
Jorge and Tanja are my main idols when it comes to Bachata, they were pretty much Angelo and my inspiration to create routines, perform and compete. I also love Darlin Garcia for his Dominican Style, and Jorget has some crazy footwork!

How often do you train and how often do you dance socially?
Train about 3 times a week and I dance socially at least once or twice a week.

Is this a full time job? What do you do besides Salsa?
I work full time in the IT industry. When you have a hobby such as dancing, it is that much more painful to get your behind to work every day.

Have you ever competed in any competitions? What was your best experience?
We have competed in the Toronto Bachata festival competition, where unfortunately we got disqualified. Then we competed in the Niagara Falls Congress Bachata competition where we have placed 1st.

What do you enjoy most about performing and what do you think it takes to make a good performance?
I think in order to have a good performance one needs to keep the crowd interested. Attracting the audience is key. Performing is a whole different world. It’s exciting and sometimes nerve wrecking all at the same time. The variety of beautiful costumes, the music, and the innovative routines is what makes it great.

What is your most embarrassing Bachata moment?
I am happy to say I don’t have one…. yet…. 😉

What is your most memorable Bachata moment?
Getting to know and hanging out with Tanja and Jorge is definitely a great bachata moment. Winning a competition and getting so much great feedback even when we were disqualified the first time was an amazing feeling and something we were very proud of.

What keeps you going? What keeps you motivated an inspired?
Great inspirational artists, great music, and supportive friends around us!

Do you have any words of advice to all the readers reading this right now?
Follow your dreams. Whether it’s the love for Bachata, dance in general, or any other hobby that you may have. It’s what keeps us sane after a long day of work, and what keeps us inspired for greater things in life.

The Nandos Cape Town Comedy Festival!

On Saturday I was smart enough to attend the Nandos Cape Town Comedy Festival at the Artscape Theatre.

I contemplated not going for a minute because a) my weekend was insanely busy and b) entrance was R200. Now prior to this weekend, I had never been to the Nandos comedy festival so I was not entirely sure if it was worth it. Then I considered the fact that Pablo Francisco was going and needless to say the decision to attend was made for me.

Pablo Francisco

Pablo for those of you who don’t know is without a doubt one of the craziest and funniest comedians alive today. He is an off-the-wall, animated character that points out the absurdity of our illogical, pop-culture obsessed world by weaving together an arsenal of characters in spontaneous outbursts that has to be seen to be believed.

The show was hosted by Michael Loftus. Mike was  an unbelievably good MCand set the tone for what was without a doubt the funniest Comedy Festival in Cape Town.

Two of South Africa’s own Loyiso Ngola and Ndumiso Lindi were also on stage and these boys held their own against all the well known international acts. Ndumiso (who personally stood out for me  because had me on the floor in tears of laughter at one point) has observations of everyday life in South Africa and on the diversity of South African cultures that is unbelivably entertaining.

As for the International comedians who graced the stage, these guys did not disappoint. There was Dan Cummins whose dark and absurd observations about the world make for some interesting comedy. Living up to his name of being – Crazy With A Capital F!

Lastly there was Greg Behrendt who is considered a brilliant lifelong comedian who accidentally became the best selling co author of – He’s Just Not That Into You.

If you missed the festival this time, put it down in your diary for 2012. The Nandos Cape Town Comedy Festival is without a doubt one of the funniest shows in Africa! (Worth the R200 +)

I am definitely putting it on my calendar of Annual Must See Events ….. right next to the Hip Hop Indaba!
